O'Rourke visits town targeted by 'terrifying' ICE raids

Aug 19, 2019

CANTON, Miss. — Beto O'Rourke on Friday became the first Democratic presidential candidate to visit one of the Mississippi towns where federal immigration agents raided chicken processing plants and arrested nearly 700 people — kicking off a new phase of his campaign he says will focus on President Donald Trump's damaging policies. It was the former Texas congressman's first campaign stop since he suspended his White House bid for nearly two weeks to stay in his hometown of El Paso, where a mass shooting killed 22 people on Aug. 3. The gunman drove 600-plus miles to open fire near the...

'A heavy lift': Religious black voters weigh Buttigieg's bid

Aug 19, 2019

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Joe Darby, a South Carolina pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, pondered a sensitive question that he knew was on the mind of his congregation. Would black voters be able to reconcile their conservative religious doctrine with voting for a gay candidate for president? "It's a heavy lift in the black church," says Darby, who is also a Charleston-area NAACP leader. "Just as nobody who is racist likes to say, 'I'm a racist,' nobody who is homophobic in the black community likes to say, 'I'm homophobic.'" In South Carolina, the first state with a predominantly African...

Farms turn to technology amid water warnings in Southwest US

Aug 19, 2019

GREELEY, Colo. — A drone soared over a blazing hot cornfield in northeastern Colorado on a recent morning, snapping images with an infrared camera to help researchers decide how much water they would give the crops the next day. After a brief, snaking flight above the field, the drone landed and the researchers removed a handful of memory cards. Back at their computers, they analyzed the images for signs the corn was stressed from a lack of water. This U.S. Department of Agriculture station outside Greeley and other sites across the Southwest are experimenting with drones, specialized cameras and other...

Aug 19, 2019

NEW DELHI — An uneasy calm prevailed in Indian-administered Kashmir on Monday as people celebrated a major Islamic festival during a severe crackdown after India moved to strip the disputed region of its constitutional autonomy and imposed an indefinite curfew. All communications and the internet remained cut off for an eighth day. News reports said that streets were deserted, with authorities not allowing any large congregations to avoid anti-India protests. A tweet by Kashmir police said Eid festival prayers "concluded peacefully in various parts of the (Kashmir) Valley. No untoward incident reported so far." It was not immediately possible to...

India eases restrictions in Kashmir for Islamic festival

Aug 19, 2019

NEW DELHI — Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir said they eased restrictions in the region's main city for a third straight day on Sunday ahead of a major Islamic festival, following India's move to strip the region of its constitutional autonomy and impose an indefinite curfew. More than 250 ATMs were made functional in Srinagar and bank branches opened for people to withdraw money ahead of Monday's Eid al-Adha festival, city administrator Shahid Choudhary said in a tweet. There was no immediate independent confirmation of reports by authorities that people were visiting shopping areas for festival purchases, as all communications and...
